All Hail The Olive
National Olive Day - Hip Hip Hooray !
This week we celebrate one of the oldest fruits in the world-the OLIVE.
Do you know what the olive symbolizes?
Guess.
You are right, the tiny, yet mighty olive, probably clocking in around 4 millennia years old is the representation of the most beautiful virtues; peace, love, hope and friendship.
Statistically, how far back does the olive grow? Let us go to Vouves in Crete where the oldest olive tree dates to 4,000 years old. There are olive trees in Lebanon and Israel which are 3000 years of age. So- your guess is as good as the oldest tree.
In any event, olives are sensational. Olives are healthy for you, they taste delicious alone or scattered on top of food and their juice produces extra virgin olive oil. Foodies love them because while seeking the five basic tastes, including sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami, olives compliment all these flavors.
Olives are versatile, and any way you pop them in your mouth, they are packed with polyphenols – antioxidant compounds. A benefit of eating olives, beside for the deliciousness, is that these little fruits reduce inflammation and boost immunity.
It’s my pleasure to share the etymology of polyphenols hailing from the Ancient Greek words πολύς \ polus -many or much, and the word phenol -referring to the chemical structure. Άξιος.
Why celebrate olives today? It’s clear as day, olives are a part of the healthiest diet in the world, the Mediterranean diet. They produce the healthiest fat, possessing healing powers which behold the cultural significance of mind, body and soul wellness.
