Gut Feeling: The Philosophy of Living Well
This week we travel to Thessaloniki, Greece, the culinary capitol of Greece, and the designated UNESCO creative city of Gastronomy to learn about the philosophy of the gut.
When it comes to food and health, we must first consider the well-being of the gut and the study of gastronomy. John Hopkins Medicine, Harvard Medical school and Stanford Medicine report a great deal of information about the gut and why you should be cognizant of its importance.
These institutions are among the leading sources identifying a mesh like network of neurons in the gut as the second brain. This system controls digestion and communicates with the central nervous system.
The second brain, or the gut, is what Kefi Life is exploring today. And yes, we are conversing with one of Thessaloniki’s top food and gut food influencers, Theodoros Pastourmatzis.
Teo, also known as the Foodscriberofficial, has traveled to over 90 countries cooking and studying different culture's to discover three important factors to living with a healthy gut:
The first thing you must do each morning upon waking is drink water. Your body uses this water as a filter to hydrate and prepare the body for working.
Your thoughts are crucial. A positive mindset will contribute to the body responding in like kind. The body does what the mind tells it to do- tell it good things.
Chew your food slowly, it is the first stage of digestion. Chewing slowly also stimulates enzyme production.
EATING:
Restricting foods is a negative. Instead eat all things in moderation with small bites.
Some foods that are favorable include bananas, pears and eggplants.
Extra virgin olive is eaten to lubricate the gut and help reduce harmful inflammation and feed beneficial bacteria.
Overall, think of your gut as an inner ecosystem, one that dictates living well over eating certain foods. Your gut knows what to do, listen to it.
Theodoros’ philosophy of food is a different approach to eating and I believe when you check out my episode with him this week, you will be inspired to respect your gut by respecting your mind and your entire body.
Sending you filkia -kisses,
