Lessons From The Thalassa
Yiasas and hello one and all. Thank you for taking time to read this blog:
August is Health and Wellness month, a time to seize the opportunity to focus on wellbeing: mentally, emotionally, physically and socially.
Today I want to highlight an aspect of wellness that is not only crucial to your survival, but one which speaks to your mind body and soul.
But first, if you do like my content, and you want me to continue to uplift you during the week, please head over to:
This month is a transition month...one which we need to prepare for the fourth quarter routines of back to school, work obligations and holiday planning.
Now, let’s take a breath and soak up the opportunity to implement a simple and very attainable thing to support your wellbeing – something that will tie into the theme of this month.
I speak of WATER:
The most basic and simple way to stay healthy and well is to incorporate water into your day.
All roads lead to water, and why it is critical to your life: which is you must drink it to stay alive. Beyond that, each day if you commit to drinking 8-10 glasses of clean water you will regulate bodily functions, transport nutrients and flush out nasty toxins. Make it a habit to take in enough water each day to keep your body running smoothly.
Fun fact: did you know that some headaches are a result of being dehydrated?
Drink your water, and if it can be water with minerals then you will add more benefits like balancing electrolytes and assisting with muscle function.
WATER IN THE THALASSA:
Thalassa is Greek for the word sea. I consider myself a thalassophile which is a person who loves the sea.
For your benefit, allow me to share the science behind why the sea (or similar body of water like a lake or ocean) will keep you healthy and well.
The sound of the waves can act as a meditative sound bringing the body into a state of relaxation and sounder sleep.
Skin improves from being in the thaslassa or the sea because the sea is full of minerals like magnesium and calcium to reduce inflammation in your skin while healing things like eczema. Cuts and scrapes heal from the salt in the Thalassa. Salt cures a number of ailments.
Joy abounds when you are in the thalassa. Studies have identified marine and coastal environments as places where people experience higher levels of happiness. Much of this is attributed to the blue spaces and sea life.
Physical activity in the sea, lake or ocean ranges from swimming, fishing, snorkeling to surfing. Floating isn’t a bad idea either. And don’t forget you can also walk on the beach, which if you are on a sand beach be sure to walk barefoot for the grounding effects.
Each adds a sense of peace and relaxation to your day when you engage in a physical activity in the midst of a vast body of water which naturally. heals a person.
Being near the thalassa/sea or ocean gives you the chance to view the horizon. This far away point, which seems so close, is where the water meets the sky. Come here and view a glorious sunrise or sunset and be blessed by one of nature’s greatest mysteries.
This month, the month of health and wellness, stay well with water, both internally and externally.
Sending you filakia kisses,
Ola kala,
Kiki
